Frozen iced tea can come in several forms, but when made correctly, still carries that burst of flavor and energy you’ve come to expect from your favorite tea. So turn on your fan, gear up your creativity (should we say creativi-tea?), and get ready to try some amazing frozen iced teas!
Tea Granita
Italy is the birthplace of many delicious frozen desserts, not the least of which is the granita. A granita is a semi-frozen, flavored, and shaved ice treat. To make a granita with tea, you will brew your tea like usual, add sweetener, then let the tea cool and freeze it in a shallow dish. Once the tea is frozen, shave it into a cup or bowl, and enjoy! For detailed instructions featuring one of our favorite brews, Mindful Morning Earl Grey creme, check out this recipe.
Tea Frappes
Another way to enjoy frozen iced tea is more akin to the blended ice beverages you may be familiar with at your favorite coffee shops. To make a tea frappe, you’ll need to blend strong tea with ice, milk, and a little bit of sweetener. Since you use the whole leaf when drinking matcha, it makes an especially tasty and strong frappe. Here’s a great recipe for a tea frappe that you can make using our unique and delicious flavored premium grade matcha.
Tea Smoothies
Like frappes but with fruit and veggies, smoothies are another fun way to get your frozen tea fix. Try a healthful double green tea smoothie made with tea, spinach, and fruit!
One of our favorite tea smoothies right now is inspired by a classic summertime drink, the piña colada. We toss pineapple and coconut milk into a blender along with our coconut chai black tea for a sweet, spicy, and fruity treat that can be made with or without alcohol. If you use frozen pineapple and banana, you can omit the ice cubes.
Frozen Chai Piña Colada Smoothie
Ingredients:
- 1 banana
- 1/2 cup pineapple
- 1 tablespoon Honey Dust (optional)
- 1 1/2 cup ice (omit if using frozen fruit)
- 3/4 cup strongly brewed Uplifting Coconut Chai, cold
- 1/2 cup coconut milk
- 1 ounce spiced rum (optional)
Directions:
Put everything into blender in the order in which it appears in the ingredients list (not super important, but helps with better blending). Cover, then use the smoothie setting on your blender -- or pulse a few times, then blend on high -- until everything is smooth. Top with a tiny umbrella and pretend you're at the beach.
Shaved Ice With Tea Syrup
It’s a tea-flavored snow cone! A little bit of a deviation from the traditional “frozen iced tea,” shaved ice is a great way to infuse tea flavor into a favorite summer treat. Follow the simple instructions for making tea syrup found in our tasty tea steamer recipe, and bring it into the right season by pouring it over a cup or bowl of shaved ice (which you can replicate at home by blending ice if you don’t have all the right ice shaving equipment). Fruity blends like our Blackberry Mojito tea are perfect for this kind of recipe.
