Looking for that creamy and dreamy alternative to cow’s milk?
Maybe something with a velvety finish that froths up beautifully and is as easy to make at home as it is on the tummy?
Oat milk is it! Oat milk in tea is a great choice for a variety of reasons—reasons we’re going to jump right on into!
The Nitty Gritty on Oat Milk: How It’s Made, Its Flavor, and Health Benefits
When made commercially, oat milk is made by mixing together oats and water before they even mill the mixture. The mixture is then milled to a very fine consistency where enzymes are added to help break down the starch. Since oats are comprised of mostly starch (50-60%), you need to work to extract these components into your liquid. Once this process is complete, the solids are removed, leaving behind what we know and love—oat milk.
The flavor by itself is comparable to mild oatmeal with a creamy texture, but when manufactured you have a variety of options that are served up on store shelves, such as sweetened, vanilla, chocolate, and unsweetened.
Since oat milk is nice and creamy, it’s thick enough for fun latte, or tea latte art!
A bonus aspect of oat milk is that it has a fuller texture and may leave you a bit more satisfied since it’s so full of starches and proteins. Added health benefits here? Most definitely! It has twice the fiber of cow’s milk which is great for the body when it comes to immune system functionality.
It’s also full of potassium, magnesium, and zinc—all of which are superheroes for your bones and teeth. Oat milk can help regulate your blood sugar levels as well as support the breakdown of carbohydrates. It’s full of B vitamins that help fuel this process.
Rest assured, you’re in great hands, or your cuppa certainly is when you’re enjoying your oat milk in tea!
How to Make Your Own Oat Milk: Yes, It’s That Easy!
When I said it was that easy, I really meant it!
To make this delightful, creamy, and fulfilling oat milk yourself, all you need is steel-cut oats, water, some cheesecloth, and a blender.
First, take one part steel cut oats to two parts water and soak overnight until your oats absorb all the liquid and soften. Throw your mixture into your blender until the oats are completely blended and the mixture is smooth. You’re welcome to add in a little more water here if you prefer your oat milk to be a little opaque.
Run the mixture through a cheesecloth (or fine mesh strainer if you don’t have cheesecloth) until the liquids are separated from the pulpy solids.
The result is your very own oat milk!
After it’s blended and strained, pour the oat milk into an airtight jar and store it in the fridge for up to a week.
Remember, without any stabilizers or emulsifiers the milk will separate in the fridge and this is normal. Just give it a good stir before drinking.
